Hey gang! lol
I doubt anyone will read this but I figured I may as well document this process of trying to get a job with the Get Shit Done team at Shopify.
I got an interview! Wahoo! It's only been 3 days since I applied. Way to go Get Shit Done crew!
Ok, so they don't call it an interview but rather a Life Story. I guess the idea is that instead of doing a regurgitated version of an interview with the same old bullshit questions, I get to tell them about my life story over an hour long skype chat. In all honesty, this is my wheelhouse so to speak. I love talking, like to think that I have had a pretty interesting life up to this point and considering that the majority of my education has been self taught, this gives me a great opportunity to showcase my goods.
My Life Story interview isn't until December 7th so I think I'm going to spend my time learning Ruby on Rails and enjoying the last month of not having to do work thing. Ruby is a programming language or more specifically a web-application framework that has everything included to develop database backed web apps. I'm not very familiar with it but the more I read, the more I'm finding out it's quickly being adopted by pretty much every tech company that is kicking ass right now. It feels like something that will take me a year or two to really become great at but the tutorials are abundant and pretty straightforward so I figured I may as well add it to my list of marathon life projects. I just finished the first 8 lessons! Here's to hoping I can gain a rudimentary understanding of it before the Life Story interview.
If you are reading this as a person who is hoping to get a job working for Shopify here's a little piece of advice that seems to have worked for me so far. Pay the $29 for a membership. If you have a minor case of OCD like I do, it will give you the opportuntiy to double check the code required for adding an app or two but it will also sort of reverse engineer the process by giving you an opportunity to chat with a Guru. She called thinking that she was going to be helping me set up and optimize my Shopify store but the call ended up being me asking her questions that helped me fine tune my store in effort to get that first interview. I don't want to publish her name publicly without asking but L***e was awesome. She's pretty smart and I was honest about what I was doing so she couldn't really help me get the job but she could help me as if I was building a real store and it was great to talk with a real life Guru. She sure loves it at Shopify and I can't blame her. (I'm level ten jelly.)
Anyways, I'm so hyped right now. Wish me luck. :)
Whoever you are, thanks for reading and have a killer day!
